DGN varsity, frosh-soph 7th at Fenton Invite; Featherstone wins open race

The Downers Grove North girls cross country varsity and frosh-soph teams both finished seventh at the Fenton Invitational.
The varsity (180 points) finished seven points from sixth. Downers Grove South (47), Vernon Hills (106) and Prospect (106) took the top three places. Official team scores were not kept, but the Trojans would have placed second in the open race.
Senior Emma Moravec was 13th (18:57.2 for 3.0 miles) and seniors Gina Kowalewicz (29th, 19:38.8) and Zoe Covey (32nd, 19:46.5) also were among the top 35.
The frosh-soph (147) was 13 points from sixth. Freshman Ellie Gross was 10th (20:37.8), and freshmen Eva Bednard (23rd, 21:00.5) and Gianna Ferraro (32nd 21:33.8) also were in the top 35.
Senior Emma Featherstone won the open race (20:45.5 for 3.0 miles) and the Trojans put six in the top 20 and nine in the top 26.
Senior Meg Kelly was ninth (21:22.2), seniors Fiona Cismesia (21:45.2), Mary Laffey (21:45.9) and junior Maggie Langland (21:48.1) were 15th, 16th and 17th, junior Annie Panico was 19th (22:02.5) and senior Maggie Tierney (22:05.7) and junior Madison Venckus and (22:07.5) were 21st and 22nd. Junior Hayley Wagreich was 26th (22:27.6), 1.3 seconds from 25th, and senior Abby Pfeiffer was 31st (22:41.2).
Featherstone qualified with the 3,200-meter relay for the Class 3A state track meet in May but this is her first cross country season. She won Saturday by 23 seconds over Prospect junior Sydney Kitzmiller (21:08.5).
Official team scores were not kept, but the Trojans would have finished second 49-55 to Downers Grove South, which placed 5-6-7-8-28 overall.
