The Downers Grove North girls cross country team had 16 individual award winners over three races at Lake Park’s Harvey Braus Invitational Saturday, Sept. 13, in Roselle.
Ninth-place sophomore Emma Moravec earned a large medal with a top-15 finish in the varsity race. Small medals went to 16-30 varsity finishers and 1-15 JV and Open finishers. Ribbons went to 16-30 JV and Open finishers.
Moravec covered the 3.0-mile course in 17:56.1 and was among 10 runners to break 18:00 in the race. Juniors Grace Maletich (18:32.3) and Angela Budach (18:34.1) were 21st and 24th, followed by juniors Ashley Johnson (38th, 18:55.0) and Kaitlyn Bonfield (42nd, 19:01.6), freshman Katie Cantlin (46th, 19:24.8), senior Jenna Murphy (51st, 19:45.1) and junior Maci Schaub (60th, 19:56.2). Varsity teams were allowed eight entries.
The Trojans (132 points) finished fifth behind defending state champion and top-ranked Glenbard West (27 points), Schaumburg (89), Hoffman Estates (94), St. Charles East (120).
The top five finishers were ranked among the top 16 in 3A by MileSplit Illinois and DyeStat Illinois with the Trojans at No. 10 and 12, respectively, as the third- and fourth-highest ranked team among the group.
The powerful junior varsity finished second as sophomores Zoe Covey (5th, 19:35.4), Brigid Miller (7th, 20:06.8) and Gina Kowalewicz (9th, 20:08.8) and junior Fiona Kelly (10th, 20:09.7) were among the top 10 and sophomore Meghan Kelly was 11th (20:10.6). Freshman Carli Nehls was 24th (20:39.2), followed by sophomores Lauren Isenman (37th, 20:58.0), Abby Pfeiffer (46th, 21:11.54) and Hannah Thomas (48th, 21:16.9), senior Alex Hohnsen (54th, 21:24.7). Teams were allowed 10 entries.
The Trojans (42 points) only were beaten by Glenbard West (30), which finished 1-3-4-6-16 and put its top seven among the top 16.
In the 2.0-mile open race, freshman Isabella Scarlati (13:28.0) and sophomore Emma Rotz (13:29.5) were 10th and 11th. Sophomore Becky Donnelly (19th, 13:40.7) and freshman Grace Puc (20th, 13:40.7) made the top 20, and freshmen Madison Venckus (22nd, 13:42.7) and Claire Kovarik (25th, 13:47.8) were in the top 25 with freshman Allison Padovani 26th (13:47.9). Sophomore Mary Laffey (38th, 14:07.7), junior Ana Scarlati (41st, 14:09.2), senior Sydney Wagner (51st, 14:17.5) and Megan Treichel (55th, 14:20.6), junior Arianna Calleja (57th, 14:21.4) and sophomores Fiona Cismenia (60th, 14:27.9) and Laura Stallter (61st, 14:28.9) were among the top 65.
