The Downers Grove North varsity girls cross country team won the 34th annual John Kurtz Earlybird Invitational at Fenton Saturday, Sept. 6.
Sophomore Emma Moravec took third (18:33.0 for 3.0 miles) as the Trojans (61 points) put four runners in the top 15. Downers Grove South (82) and Oak Park-River Forest (118) were second and third.
Moravec only finished behind Fenwick senior Olivia Ryan (18:12.4) and Prospect sophomore Brooke Wilson (18:22.1). Ryan is a three-time all-stater who finished 22nd at the 2013 Class 3A state meet.
Junior Ashley Johnson was seventh (18:55.6) and juniors Grace Maletich (19:09.8) and Angela Budach (19:12.3) were 12th and 14th, and junior Kaitlyn Bonfield was 26th (19:37.4) in her season debut. Senior Jenna Murphy (40th, 20:04.5) and junior Maci Schaub (53rd, 20:32.3) were the team's No. 6 and 7 finishers.
The junior varsity (76 points) also had four top-15 finishers to place third behind Downers South (62) and Glenbard East (71).
Senior Zayna Jan (20:14.4) and freshman Katie Cantlin (20:21.8) were 10th and 11th and sophomore Zoe Covey (20:37.8) and senior Rachel Krusenoski (20:49.8) were 13th and 15th. Sophomores Gina Kowalewicz (27th, 21:20.6) and Brigid Miller (35th, 21:43.4) and senior Alex Hohnsen (39th, 21:50.2) also finished among the top 40.
In the open race, the Trojans swept third through seventh place with sophomore Hannah Thomas (20:50.3), junior Fiona Kelly (21:07.9), sophomore Meghan Kelly (21:30.0), freshman Carli Nehls (21:30.3) and senior Shannon Kennedy (21:30.8).
Senior Olivia VanderLeest (9th, 21:40.2) also placed in the top 10. Sophomore Lauren Isenman (11th, 21:43.4) and senior Rachel Schuetz (14th, 21:50.1) and sophomore Abby Pfeiffer (15th, 21:51.5) also placed among the top 15. No team scores were kept.
