DGN at St. Charles North Invite roundup

The Downers Grove North girls cross country team had a strong overall team performance in its first trip to the St. Charles North Invitational Saturday, Oct. 4.

The varsity finished fifth (126 points) in a field with five the top-20 ranked teams in Class 3A. The frosh-soph (108) and open (119) lineups both were fourth.

Sophomore Emma Moravec (18:32.8 for 3.0 miles) and junior Kaitlyn Bonfield (18:43.1) were 17th and 21st for the varsity to both earn top-25 ribbons. Junior Angela Budach was 27th (18:52.8), 2.3 seconds from 25th, followed by juniors Grace Maletich (29th, 18:55.0) and Ashley Johnson (32nd, 19:00.9) and seniors Zayna Jan (51st, 19:38.5) and Jenna Murphy (67th, 20:08.8).

The Trojans finished behind Hinsdale Central (49), Minooka (95) and Batavia (97), all ranked ahead of them, and Geneva (115). In this week’s rankings the Trojans and Geneva respectively were No. 14 and 19 by MileSplit Illinois and No. 17 and 18 by DyeStat Illinois.

Sophomore Zoe Covey was sixth in the frosh-soph race (19:59.3), broke 20:00 and received a top-10 medal.

Sophomores Gina Kowalewicz (17th, 20:33.5) and Brigid Miller (25th, 20:53.0) earned top-25 ribbons with Miller getting the last award by just .1 of a second. Sophomore Meghan Kelly (29th, 20:56.9, freshmen Madison Venckus (31st, 20:58.0), Carli Nehls (33rd, 21:05.9) and Isabella Scarlati (39th, 21:18.6) and sophomores Lauren Isenman (42nd, 21:27.6) and Abby Pfeiffer (50th, 21:38.8) also placed among the top 50.

The frosh-soph finished behind Geneva (55 points), Hinsdale Central (75) and Batavia (80).

Junior Maci Schaub (20:36.5) was 11th in the open race, 1.5 seconds from the last top-10 medal. Schaub, senior Shannon Kennedy (17th, 21:00.8) and junior Fiona Kelly (20th, 21:10.3) earned top-25 ribbons, followed by seniors Olivia Matheu (32nd, 21:37.9), Sydney Wagner (40th, 21:54.1) and Olivia Vander Leest (50th, 22:46.2) and junior Arianna Calleja (59th, 23:05.3).

The open team finished behind Hinsdale Central (28 points), Batavia (81) and Geneva (88).
